One morning not long ago, I opened the curtains and saw them: a bull elk and his partner nestled in the cool light of dawn. They weren’t moving fast. After the hustle and bustle of getting our household up and out, they got up and out too and wandered off to the forest. 

My 5-year-old son had his own explanation for what they do after getting up: "They go off to the forest to read the Quran."
